Clifford Canku, assistant professor of Dakota Studies at North Dakota State University in Fargo, will speak Wednesday about Dakota elders, as part of the Indian Heights Park Lecture Series.
The title of the lecture is "Dakota Elders: Guardians of our Future 2013." It will be at 6 p.m. at 1800 Terracewood Drive N.W. in Rochester.
Canku is an ordained Presbyterian minister, a member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate and a fluent Dakota language speaker. He co-authored the book "The Dakota Prisoner of War Letters," which features 50 letters written by some of the 270 Dakota men who, during the Dakota War of 1862, were taken from Mankato to a prison camp in Davenport, Iowa.
The lecture series is part of an effort by the Greater Rochester Area Dakota Supporters and the Diversity Foundation of Minnesota to recapture the history of the Dakota people.
Wednesday's lecture is open to the public and free of charge.
