Day in History: 100 degrees in 1988

1988 — 25 years ago

Highs are expected to approach the 100-degree mark today and tomorrow in Rochester. It has been three years since the temperature has reached the three-digit mark.

Richard Clugston, dean of students at Rochester Community College since 1966 will retire on Aug. 2, 1988.

More than $30,000 has been raised to help pay Mayo Clinic plastic surgery costs for a 4-year-old boy from India whose face was severely burned. Mayor Chuck Hazama praised the generosity of Rochester citizens and all others who have contributed to the fund.

1963 — 50 years ago

Jodie (Joanne) Ward, formerly of Rochester, has begun a movie and acting career in Mexico City. She has been appearing as a television actress and professional model. While in Rochester she appeared in several Rochester Civic Theater productions.

Two new stamps have come into the Rochester branch of the U.S. Post Office in the past two weeks and immediately have sold out. The two are a Civil War Centennial commemorative stamp and a West Virginia 100-year statehood stamp.

1938 — 75 years ago

Dr. R.E. Fricke, of the Mayo Clinic staff, will speak on the topic "Radium in Medicine" in the lobby of the clinic tonight.

The combined Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey circus will be in Rochester on July 16. The show will be set up at the circus grounds.

One hundred and twenty-five Rochester youngsters have competed in swimming events at the municipal pool in an effort to qualify for the Elementary School Swimming Championship finals.
