1990 – 25 years ago
• The Kenyon-Wanamingo high school girls volleyball team downed Kasson-Mantorville in four games to claim a 12th District Four title. The team is coached by Diane Nikunen.
• The Progressive Tool and Manufacturing Company will open a second plant north of Rochester. A 25,000-square-foot building will be on 9.4 acres of land along U.S. 63 about four miles north of Rochester's city limits.
1965 – 50 years ago
• An FBI law enforcement conference will be held in Rochester for all Southeastern Minnesota law enforcement officers. Topics to be covered include improving the image of law enforcement, scientific aids used in law enforcement and interagency cooperation.

1940 – 75 years ago
• Rochester is headed for the largest vote in its history today when a huge morning vote marked the city's part in the presidential election of 1940. By noon over 3,000 votes had been cast. President Roosevelt voted in the town hall of Hyde Park village today while his opponent Wendell Willkie cast his vote at a public school building in New York City.
• There is much interest in the city for the upcoming Passion Play to be presented with active support of many religious civic and educational groups. Rochester school authorities have granted permission for students to be dismissed from classes to attend the matinee performances.
1915 – 100 years ago
• The revival meetings held in Salem Evangelical church, Sixth and Prospect streets, conducted by Rev. J. M. Baitinger, will come to a close. He has been preaching to a full house from evening to evening, many coming from a distance of ten to fifteen miles.

Ten years ago: Leaders from across the Americas ended their two-day summit in Argentina without agreeing on whether to restart talks on a free trade zone stretching from Alaska to Chile. Pirates attacked a cruise ship off the coast of Somalia, but the ship changed course and sped away to escape. British author John Fowles died in Lyme Regis, Dorset, England, at age 79. Guitar master Link Wray died in Copenhagen at age 76.

Five years ago: President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, boarded Air Force One to fly to Mumbai, India, the first stop of a 10-day tour through India, Indonesia, South Korea and Japan. A judge in Los Angeles sentenced Johannes Mehserle (yoh-HAH'-nes MEZ'-ur-lee), a white former transit officer, to two years in prison in the shooting death of Oscar Grant, an unarmed black man, on an Oakland train platform; the minimal sentence provoked angry protests. (Mehserle ended up serving 11 months.) Cable channel MSNBC suspended host Keith Olbermann for two shows for making unapproved political donations. Actress Jill Clayburgh died in Lakeville, Connecticut, at age 66. Opera singer Shirley Verrett, 79, died in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
One year ago: A day after sweeping Republican election gains, President Barack Obama and incoming Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell pledged to try to turn divided government into a force for good rather than gridlock, yet warned of veto showdowns as well.
