Day in History: Cellular technology expanding in Rochester

1988 – 25 years ago

New walls are rising at Marigold Foods Inc. in Rochester as construction crews work to enclose the expansion of the company's ice cream plant. Construction of the 71,000 square-foot addition at the north end of the plant is on schedule. The expansion costs are between $13 and $15 million and will create a number of new jobs.

Technology is making it easier to talk on the go and United States Cellular has now begun operating in the Rochester area. The new cellular phone technology works like a telephone on a desk, but with no dial tone. The cellular phones are for doctors, contractors, sales people, real estate agents and other who spend work time away from their desks.

1963 – 50 years ago

For the first time, a woman won the Golden Doorknob plaque for the best open door policy to women employees. She is Mrs. Helen Eulberg, manager of Young Elites Shops in Rochester.

At the National Business Women's Week observance luncheon at the Kahler Hotel Mrs. Roberta Skow, personal service counselor for Model Lawlers Clothing Care Centre won The Woman of the Year Award.

About 1,000 entries have been received for the First District Horticultural Society's holiday and garden show this weekend. The "Holiday Panorama" and "Autumn Abundance" will be held in Heritage Hall of the Kahler Hotel.

1938 – 75 years ago

Clarence Maley, veteran winner of titles in his home county, captured the Mower County corn husker title again when he husked 25.7 bushels as more than 1,000 spectators watched the contest. Harry Swellend, Kenyon, won the Goodhue championship husking 21.8 bushels.

The Rochester High School homecoming game with Mankato will be followed by a dance in the high school gymnasium for the two schools. Miss Mary Adson is chairperson of the music committee.

Young people of the First Evangelical church entertained at a wiener roast at the Carleton Penz farm near Rochester. Forty-seven members were present and there were games and campfire songs.

One year ago:With national polls showing a dead heat three weeks before Election Day, President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney met for their second debate. During the town-hall-style encounter in suburban New York, Obama accused Romney of favoring a "one-point plan" to help the rich at the expense of the middle class, while Romney countered by saying "the middle class has been crushed over the last four years." The Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees 2-1 to go up 3-0 in the American League Championship Series.
