Day in History: Dr. Mayo presents flags to high school

1988 – 25 years ago

Statewide gasoline prices are dropping. In southern Minnesota, the average full service price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline is $1.11. Average price at a self-service station is just over $1 a gallon.

Rochester Community College won the state community college volleyball championship in Crookston beating Minnesota-Crookston 15-10, 15-11 and 15-11 in the title match. The team is coached by Jean Marconett.

1963 – 50 years ago

Nine Minnesota deer hunters died on opening deer season weekend. Three died of gunshots and six of heart attacks.


It is estimated that 401,000 war veterans live in Minnesota. World War I veterans average 69.1 years of age and World War II veterans average 44 years old.

1938 – 75 years ago

Without regard to race or religion, there is but one thing asked of Americans-that they be Americans first, Dr. William J. Mayo told Rochester High School students during the student assembly to celebrate Armistice Anniversary. Dr. Mayo presented a Minnesota state flag and a Rochester High School flag to the student body. The Rochester Junior College dramatic club, orchestra and mixed chorus presented an Armistice program in the auditorium after the presentation ceremony.

A gold watch was presented to Gus Berg who retired as janitor of the Bethel English Lutheran Church, at a meeting of the Men's club. Thomas Keys, the Mayo Clinic librarian, was the guest speaker.

In Galveston, Texas, millionaire Robert Durst was found not guilty of murdering Morris Black, an elderly neighbor who Durst said he'd killed accidentally. Toronto's Roy Halladay won the American League Cy Young Award.

Five years ago:President George W. Bush marked his last Veterans Day as president at a New York pier, speaking to a crowd of thousands gathered for the rededication of the USS Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. San Francisco's Tim Lincecum won the National League Cy Young Award.

One year ago:President Barack Obama laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery and said the Sept. 11 generation had "written one of the greatest chapters" in the country's military service, toppling a dictator and battling an insurgency in Iraq, pushing back the Taliban in Afghanistan and decimating al-Qaida's leadership. A Florida woman identified as the recipient of harassing emails from David Petraeus' girlfriend acknowledged her friendship with the former CIA director. Jill Kelley, an unpaid social liaison to MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, said she and her family had been friends with Petraeus and his family for more than five years.
