• The Rochester Elks Lodge is getting settled in its new home at 15th Avenue and 10th Street Southeast. The Elks members began moving furnishings and fixtures from the former location at Second Street and Second Avenue Southwest, which has been purchased by the Mayo Clinic. The new building contains about 15,000 square feet of usable floor space, and projected plans call for a swimming pool on the premises.
• The Mayo Clinic School of Physical Therapy, operated in Rochester for the past 27 years, has completed its move into new facilities in the basement of the former Congregational Church at Second Avenue Southwest.
• Mayo Clinic registrations in 1964 set a record with 191,699 patients registered or about a 2 percent increase from the previous all-time high set in 1963.
1940 – 75 years ago
• The Zumbro Lutheran Church started plans for its 75th anniversary. A history of the church will be published with the help of church historian, S.L. Lyksett. The anniversary weekend will be May 18 and 19.
• A series of 26 radio programs "Lest We Forget" which dramatize the establishment and preservation of freedom of speech, press, religion and assembly in the United States, will be broadcast over KROC. The series is sponsored by the Rochester William T. McCoy post.
• Preparations are being made by the city of Rochester for the annual birthday ball to honor President Roosevelt and raise funds for the national campaign against infantile paralysis.

The U.S. Senate voted 72-26 for a $1.1 trillion government-wide spending bill, sending it to President Barack Obama for his signature. The state of Ohio executed Dennis McGuire for the 1989 rape and fatal stabbing of pregnant newlywed Joy Stewart; McGuire gasped and snorted for 26 minutes before he was declared dead, raising questions about the drugs used in his lethal injection. "American Hustle" and "Gravity" each received 10 Academy Award nominations; "12 Years a Slave" (which ended up winning Best Picture) trailed close behind with nine Oscar nods. Death claimed actors Russell Johnson ("Gilligan's Island") at age 89 and Dave Madden ("The Partridge Family") at age 82.
