Day in History: KROC to broadcast championship boxing match at Yankee Stadium

1988 – 25 years ago

The United States Air Force Thunderbirds will be appearing at the 1988 Air Show at the Rochester airport. Adult admission is $8 at the gate.

Dr. Paul Belau, who entered the Mayo Foundation as a fellow in April, 1960 has now been named a new Mayo Clinic consultant in the Section of Ophthalmology.

Work will get underway in two days on the rerouting of utility lines in connection with the construction of the new Rochester Methodist Hospital. Official groundbreaking will be held for the $14 million structure in August.

1938 – 75 years ago

Station KROC will carry the blow-by-blow account of the Joe Louis and Max Schmeling 15-round heavyweight championship bout tonight in Yankee Stadium in New York City. More than 80,000 people are expected at the title battle. The Rochester station is one of six no-network stations in the United States which were given permission to broadcast the bout. (Louis scored a technical knockout of Schmeling two minutes and four seconds into the first round.)

John Blaine Mestad, son of Mrs. Mabel Mestad, former Rochester police matron, has been selected as one of 26 Minneapolis boys to attend the second national HI-Y congress at Berea, Ky.
