Day in History: Mayo Foundation left gift of $21.6 million

1991 – 25 years ago

• George M. Eisenberg has left Mayo Foundation its largest single gift of $21.6 million. Eisenberg in his will left Mayo 52 percent of his stock in the company he founded, American Decal & Manufacturing.

• Kim Dutelle fired a final round 81 to win the Rochester Golf and Country club women's tournament.

1966 – 50 years ago

• Kasson is assured of a trip to the 43rd annual Minnesota Baseball Association tournament at Belle Plaine. Kasson edged Winona 2-1 as catcher Jerry Raddatz hit a home run in the first inning and center fielder Doug Burgess hit a dinger in the fourth. Kasson pitcher John Ozbun got the win.

• A reminder for all John Marshall, Mayo and Lourdes football hopefuls that there will be a mouthguard-fitting session this evening at the John Marshall student center.

1941 – 75 years ago

• The weather looks great for the opening of the Winona County Fair. Tonight's grandstand program will be Jimmie Lynch's American Daredevils in a "Duel with Destiny."

• Sixty-four local men were tentatively accepted for employment to assist in the building and construction of the U.S. military base in Newfoundland. Many of those selected from the interviews were truck drivers and carpenters.

• Mrs. John Dubbels of Haverhill Township captured the pie baking championship contest with a cherry pie at a meeting of the Farm Bureau. Following the judging all pies entered in the contest were eaten by the fifty-five who attended the meeting.

1916 – 100 years ago

• Drs. C.H. and W. J. Mayo attended the funeral services for Dr. John P. Murphy in Chicago. Dr. Murphy was Chicago's noted surgeon and had attended clinics in Rochester several times.

• Mr. E.T. Whiting and W.B. McDermott have been named special policemen, to serve without pay. They will be at the Mayo Clinic.

Ten years ago: A former American school teacher, John Mark Karr, was arrested in Thailand as a suspect in the 1996 slaying of child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey in Boulder, Colorado. (Karr's confession that he had killed JonBenet was later discredited.) New York City officials released new tapes of hundreds of heart-wrenching phone calls from the World Trade Center on 9/11, along with other emergency transcripts. Alfredo Stroessner, the anti-communist general who'd ruled Paraguay for decades, died in Brasilia, Brazil, at age 93.

Five years ago:President Barack Obama, on a Midwest bus tour, implored Iowans during a stopover in Peosta to share ideas with him about how leaders could give an economic jolt to the nation's heartland. Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, meeting in Paris, called for greater economic discipline and unity among European nations but declined to take immediate financial measures.

One year ago:Trigana Air Service Flight 257, an Indonesian ATR 42-300, crashed during a domestic flight; all 54 people on board were killed. Tens of thousands of Brazilians demonstrated their discontent with President Dilma Roussef.
