Day in History: Mayor pickpocket victim in St. Paul

1990 – 25 years ago

• Rochester public school teachers and administrators reached tentative agreement on a 1989-91 contract. Sources say the agreement calls for an average of about 10.75 percent increase per teacher over two years. The agreement came after an eight-hour closed session with a state mediator.

• Testing got underway for prospective employees at the U.S. Census Bureau Office in Rochester. People must take a test to be qualified for various positions that will assist in census taking during and before April.

• Rochester law enforcement officers are out in force on city streets to ticket drivers who violate Minnesota's school bus stop-arm law.

1965 – 50 years ago

• Legislators at the state Capitol are preparing to introduce four bills that would directly affect Rochester and Olmsted County residents. The first will be a measure transferring land north of Rochester to the State Highway Department for a connecting link between U.S. highways 52 and 63. Other bills would transfer Rochester State Hospital land to the city for a new park, and set aside land and authorize bonds to compete the Rochester Junior College campus southeast of the city.

• The bounty on skunks in Olmsted County has been set at $2 per varmint. Bounties for pocket gophers or striped gophers remains at 10 cents.

• Swine Day will be held in the auditorium at the University of Minnesota southern school and experiment station at Waseca.

1940 – 75 years ago

• Smiling and optimistic as to his health, former New York Yankee star Lou Gehrig returned here for medical treatment at the Mayo Clinic. Doctors are preparing a new series of treatments to battle the form of infantile paralysis which forced Gehrig out of baseball.

• Eight clubs will comprise the Rochester Pee Wees baseball league and there will be 10 boys on each squad.

• Mayor Paul Grassle attended the Minnesota democratic Jackson day dinner last night at the Hotel St. Paul and a billfold containing $60 in cash disappeared from the mayor's pocket within a half-hour of entering the hotel. The lobby was crowded with hundreds of people.

Ten years ago: The United States acknowledged dropping a 500-pound bomb on the wrong house during a search for terror suspects outside the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. (The military said that five people were killed; the house's owner said 14 people died.) Marty Schottenheimer of the San Diego Chargers was named The Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year.

Five years ago: Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, accused of trying to blow up a U.S. airliner on Christmas, appeared in federal court in Detroit; the judge entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf. Vice President Joe Biden's mother, Jean Biden, died in Wilmington, Delaware, at age 92.

One year ago: Emails and text messages obtained by The Associated Press and other news organizations suggested that one of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's top aides engineered traffic jams in Fort Lee in Sept. 2013 to punish its mayor for not endorsing Christie for re-election; Christie responded by saying he'd been misled by the aide, and he denied involvement in the apparent act of political payback. Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and Frank Thomas were elected to baseball's Hall of Fame.
