Day in History: Mrs. C.W. Mayo and daughter Mildred to ride in Winona horse show

1988 – 25 years ago

The centennial of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Bear Valley, near Mazeppa will be observed this Friday. St. John's dates back to 1887 when the Rev. Christian Meurer conducted the first service for several families in the Bear Valley public schoolhouse. The congregation was officially organized in 1888.

Bob Lee of Rochester fired a hole-in-one on the 212-yard eighth hole at Soldiers Field Golf Course.

1963 – 50 years ago

Five thousand fans were on hand for the Barne's RCA approved championship rodeo at Blaine's 120 Ranch near Kasson. Some 30 participants competed in bare-back, bronc riding, calf roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling and Brahma bull riding events.

Pastors of Rochester's three Catholic churches have endorsed the public school's $7.7 million bond issue which will be submitted to the voters on September 24.

Elementary school students in Spring Valley will be attending school in a brand new school building next week. The school is of tan color, glass and pressed granite block and stone trim.

1938 – 75 years ago

With a new course in typing added, the Elgin school will open September 6. An industrial arts teacher and a coach are being sought by the board of education.

There were no injuries in Preston when a horse on a bridge became frightened by a car and jumped on the fender and hood of the car. The rider, Robert Groth, was thrown from the horse.

Several locals will be riding in the Winona Saddle and Bridle Club horse show. In the list of entries are Mrs. C. W. Mayo, her daughter, Mildred and her niece, Alice Robinson.
