Day in History: New 30,000 gallon milk tank lifted into place

1989 – 25 years ago

• New guidelines from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources recommend that fish (walleyes, northern, panfish) taken from the Mississippi River should not be eaten more than once a month.

• Wendy Olson, Dodge Center's 5'9" senior forward, netted 26 points and became the newest member of the career 1,000 point club. Despite her effort, her team fell short to Hayfield 64-57.

1964 – 50 years ago

• Patricia Paukert and Gregg Clendenin were crowned queen and king of the Stewartville Valentine Dance. The dance is sponsored by the Girls Friendship Club.

• Rochester's most successful Beaux Arts Ball drew nearly 500 guests. The Ball of the Odyssey at the Kahler's Heritage Hall was the first sellout in 12 years. This is one of Rochester's top social events.

• A 17-ton, 30,000 gallon milk tank was lifted by cranes and installed at the Rochester Dairy Plant. Measuring 12 feet in diameter, the tank will be used to keep Grade A milk isolated from the manufacturing processes. The huge tank was brought to the north side of the plant by train.

1939 – 75 years ago

• Rochester Chief of Police Louis Claude will address the Men's Club of Bethel Lutheran Church at a dinner meeting. The Chief will discuss current juvenile delinquency issues.

• Still able to read her Bible in Norwegian, Mrs. Ellen Rolland, a Wanamingo area resident, celebrated her 104 birthday. She was born in Norway in 1835 and came to America in 1874.

Bush's Vietnam-era military service, released documents it said proved he had met his requirements in the Texas Air National Guard. Democrat John Kerry won the Virginia and Tennessee primaries. A truck bombing in Iskandariyah, Iraq, killed 53 people. An Iranian plane crashed in the United Arab Emirates, killing 46 people.

Five years ago:The Senate approved President Barack Obama's giant economic stimulus measure. U.S. and Russian communication satellites collided in the first-ever crash of its kind in orbit, shooting out a pair of massive debris clouds. Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni's (TSIH'-pee LIHV'-neez) centrist Kadima Party narrowly won the most seats in Israel's 120-member parliament. (However, it was Benjamin Netanyahu who ended up forming the new Israeli government.)

One year ago:Joe Paterno's family released its response to Penn State's report on the Jerry Sandusky scandal, attacking Louis Freeh's conclusion that the coach hid sex abuse allegations against his longtime assistant. Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford took charge of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan. A stampede killed 37 people during a Hindu festival in northern India. At the Grammy Awards, Fun. won song of the year for "We Are Young"; Gotye's massive and oddball pop hit "Somebody I Used to Know" picked up record of the year.
