1990 – 25 years ago
• A Mayo Clinic plastic surgeon removed a small skin cancer found during an examination of former first lady Nancy Reagan. Ronald and Nancy Reagan arrived in Rochester for routine physicals at the Mayo Clinic. Mayo physicians found the Reagans to be in excellent health other than the small cancer.
• The Homework Hotline, started by teachers who help students with problem-solving, will start Sept. 10. Hormel and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota provided a grant of $40,000 for the hotline.
1965 – 50 years ago
• A November opening is planned for the Mayo Clinic's new luncheon area on the first floor of the Harwick Building at Second Street and Third Avenue Southwest. Seating will be provided for about 300, and food service will be provided by the Kahler Corp.

• A total of 190 pints of blood have been collected from three Dodge County towns by the American Red Cross Bloodmobile. Hayfield, Dodge Center and West Concord were visited.
• Dr. Clark Millikan, veteran Rochester tennis player, was elected president of the Rochester Tennis Club.
1940 – 75 years ago
• Elgin High School will be adding three new subjects this year when school opens Sept. 3. The classes are Latin II, higher algebra and physics.
• Walter Klee, of Rochester, and Morgan Hutchins, of Red Wing, both enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the Minneapolis recruiting station.
• Noted astrologer Llewellyn George will give a lecture at Mayo Clinic auditorium. The title of the presentation will be, "Astrology is the study of life's reactions to planetary vibrations and as such it merits the attention of everyone who is interested in human welfare."
1915 – 100 years ago
• Work will soon be completed on an automobile highway that will connect Duluth and Port Arthur, Ontario, Canada. This highway will, for the most part, follow the shores of Lake Superior and will be one of the most beautiful highways in the world.

Ten years ago: New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin ordered everyone in the city to evacuate after Hurricane Katrina grew to a monster storm. Iraqi negotiators finished a new constitution but without the endorsement of Sunni Arabs. West Oahu of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, won the Little League World Series title with a 7-6 win over the defending champions from Willemstad, Curacao.
Five years ago: Conservative commentator Glenn Beck and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin headlined a "Restoring Honor" rally attended by tens of thousands in Washington. U.S. and Afghan forces repelled attackers wearing American uniforms and suicide vests in a pair of simultaneous assaults before dawn on NATO bases near the Pakistan border. A gunman in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., shot and killed the mother of his two children, the woman's boyfriend and three other people before fleeing with the children to Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., where he killed himself (the children were unharmed).
One year ago: Comedian Joan Rivers was rushed to New York's Mount Sinai Hospital after she suffered cardiac arrest at a doctor's office where she'd gone for a routine outpatient procedure (Rivers died a week later at age 81). Acknowledging he "didn't get it right" with a two-game suspension for Ravens running back Ray Rice, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced tougher penalties for players accused of domestic violence, including six weeks for a first offense and at least a year for a second. Glenn Cornick, 67, the original bass player in the rock band Jethro Tull, died in Hilo, Hawaii.
