1989 – 25 years ago
• The Red Wing training school is marking its centennial this year. More than 50,000 Minnesotans have spent parts of their youth inside its walls. In August 1889, ground was broken and the cornerstone laid the following year. By 1894, the residents numbered 333, including several dozen girls.
• A permanent memorial has been built in Kasson and will be dedicated on this date. Kasson residents and veterans Gary Gullickson and Rebel Temple both financed the $1,000 project.
1964 – 50 years ago
• Construction for the new $14 million Methodist Hospital is on schedule. The new 500-bed, two-block-long hospital is slated for opening in December 1966. The facility will be nine stories high and have 28 operating rooms.

• A 500-pupil secondary school building constructed on the 38-acre site owned by the Independent District 857 just east of the village of Lewiston was recommended by the Bureau of Field Studies and Surveys.
• The weekly grand prize offered to youngsters whose questions will be used in the Junior Editors feature that appears daily in the Post-Bulletin will be a complete set of the 15-volume Compton's Pictured Encyclopedia.
1939 – 75 years ago
• Rochester and southern Minnesota today were busy with preparations for the July 4 observance when thousands will flock to celebrations here and at surrounding points while others seek recreation at lakes and streams. Mayor Grassle issued a proclamation calling upon Rochester citizens to ban noise in their celebration. He also urged attendance at the fireworks display.
• A burglar who bored his way into the George Speten pool hall in Stewartville escaped in a hail of bullets after being discovered by the village marshal. The burglar left a suit coat, a brace and a bit in his haste to escape. He did get away with some cigarettes and $20 in nickels.

Ten years ago: U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan won a promise from Sudan's government to send troops to stop militia violence in the Darfur region. Maria Sharapova won her first Grand Slam title by beating Serena Williams 6-1, 6-4 at Wimbledon. Former Soviet cosmonaut Andrian Nikolayev died in Cheboksary, Chuvash Autonomous Republic, at age 74.
Five years ago: In a surprise announcement, Sarah Palin said she would resign as Alaska governor, effective July 26, 2009. Vice President Joe Biden visited Baghdad, where he pressed Iraqi leaders to do more to foster national reconciliation and offered U.S. assistance in achieving that goal. Businessman John S. Barry, who turned rust-fighter WD-40 into a household brand, died in La Jolla, Calif., at age 84.
