• Olmsted County Sheriff Charles Von Wald announced he will retire before the fifth four-year term ends. Von Wald was hired in 1957. Chief Deputy Stan Anderson is expected to be appointed sheriff.
• Stewartville's senior right hander Van Beach tossed his first no-hitter with 11 strikeouts and no walks in a 9-1 victory over Winona Cotter in Hiawatha Valley high school baseball play.
• Local butchers Terry Huckstadt, of Huckstadt Chatfield, and Glen Shirk, of Ye Olde Butcher Shopper in Rochester, received awards at the Tri-State Association of Meat Processors convention in Minneapolis.

• Mr. and Mrs. J.W. (Bill) Howe, who met at Winona Business College and have been together ever since, were elected the first king and queen at the Rochester Senior Citizens Day Center. Howe was born in Sweden of Norwegian parents and come with them to the Dakotas in 1887, the year the states were admitted to the Union.

• Spencer Tracy stars in Howard Hughes' air thriller "Sky Devils." The matinee showings are 15 cents admission and doors open at 2 p.m.
• At Rochester Table Supply on North Broadway two large bars of Ivory soap are 15 cents, Hills Bros. coffee is 52 cents for a 2-pound can and oranges are 28 cents per dozen.
• An all-white porcelain enamel Prosperity Gas Range is $41.80 at Sears, Roebuck and Co. on South Broadway.

Bush, Russian President Vladimir Putin, French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder commemorated the 60th anniversary of the Allied victory over Nazi Germany with a lavish military parade in Moscow. President Bush then traveled to the republic of Georgia, the first American chief executive to visit. Actress Renee Zellweger married country music star Kenny Chesney on the Caribbean island of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands (the marriage was annulled just months later).
