• Ground breaking ceremony for a $1.2 million expansion and remodeling project at Pine Haven Care Center in Pine Island was held. A fund-raising campaign called, "Caring for the Future," has raised $35,000 so far.
• Catherine Restovich of Rochester has been named to the dean's list at St. Mary's College at Notre Dame, Ind.
1968 – 50 years ago
• The Downtown Kiwanis Club today honored outstanding students from Mayo, Lourdes and Dover-Eyota. The three were Kay Kepp of Mayo, Ray Herdina of Lourdes and Barbara Kahl of Dover-Eyota.

1944 – 75 years ago
• The second meeting of the American War Dads, recently organized as a club for fathers of men and women in service will be held in the VFW clubrooms. At the first meeting 32 fathers attended.
• Dr. and Mrs. W.R. Winner of Lanesboro will be enjoying time with their son, Pfc. Robert Winner, who has a 30-day furlough from his military service in the South Pacific.
• Shows being broadcast on the radio tonight is Ida Lupino, Date with Judy, Fibber McGee, Eddie Cantor, Bob Hope and Red Skelton.
1916 – 100 years ago
• A streak of light in the heavens attracted the attention of hundreds of Rochester people and there were many inquiries. The streak of light which disappeared at 10:30 p.m. had no fixed place in astronomy according to Prof. J.M. Holzinger of Winona. All over the city persons gazed into the sky, puzzled by the strange light.
• Miss Louise Golberg celebrated her third birthday. This made her twelve years old. In honor of the event, she invited twelve friends over to her home at 621 West Fourth Street. Miss Golberg is among the few who celebrate their birthday once every four years.

Twelve years ago (2004):Facing rebellion, Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide resigned and left for exile in the Central African Republic. (Aristide returned to Haiti in March 2011.) "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" won a record-tying 11 Academy Awards, including best picture; Sean Penn took the best-actor prize for "Mystic River" and Charlize Theron won best actress for portraying Aileen Wuornos in "Monster." Playwright Jerome Lawrence died in Malibu, California, at age 88.

Four years ago (2012):Violent weather packing tornadoes continued to ravage the Midwest and South, resulting in some 15 deaths. Davy Jones, 66, the heartthrob singer who helped propel the made-for-TV rock band The Monkees to the top of the pop charts, died in Stuart, Florida.
