Day in History: Students reject Wasioja as name for new school

1990 – 25 years ago

• Pat Dunn, a veteran of 31 years of wrestling officiating has retired. Dunn has been one of the most respected officials in the state and has been a fixture at the Region One tournament. He also has worked at the Minnesota high school state wrestling tournament on a number of occasions.

• The main bar and dining room of the clubhouse at Willow Creek Golf Course in southwest Rochester was heavily damaged by fire and smoke. About a dozen banquets will have to be moved or cancelled because of the fire.

• Students who will attend the new Dodge Center-Claremont-West Concord school system have organized to veto the early selection of "Wasioja" as the name for the new school.

1965 – 50 years ago

• Gov. Karl Rolvaag presented the Nathan Hale Essay Award to Richard Andersen of Rochester at the State Capitol in St. Paul. Andersen is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Howard Andersen of Plummer Lane.

• Lyle' cage team romped past LeRoy 74-54 in high school basketball to win the Southland Conference title. Coach Allen Andreotti's team has a record of 16-1 so far this year.

1940 – 75 years ago

• Small pox vaccinations have been given to 558 grade school students this past week according to the public health nurse, Miss Charlotte Hanson.

• Medico-military lessons learned in the Great War were presented by Captain C.G. Blitch at a meeting of the Rochester chapter of the Reserve Officers association in the Mayo Foundation House. Lieutenant R.E. Weismann spoke on epidemiology and there was a discussion on military sanitation.

• At Mac's Grocery in Rochester pork chops are 15 cents a pound, apples are 5 pounds for 25 cents and rutabagas are 5 pounds for 9 cents.

Ten years ago: President George W. Bush named John Negroponte, the U.S. ambassador to Iraq, as the government's first national intelligence director. Iraq's electoral commission certified the results of the Jan. 30 elections and allocated 140 of 275 National Assembly seats to the United Iraqi Alliance, giving the Shiite-dominated party a majority in the new parliament. Actor Dan O'Herlihy died in Malibu, Calif., at age 85.

Five years ago: President Barack Obama marked the one-year anniversary of the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, saying it had staved off another Great Depression and kept up to 2 million people on the job. Eight American missionaries charged with child kidnapping in Haiti were released after nearly three weeks in a Haitian jail. Americans Lindsey Vonn and Julia Mancuso captured gold and silver in the women's Olympic downhill in Vancouver. Actress Kathryn Grayson, 88, died in Los Angeles.

One year ago: The co-pilot of an Italian-bound Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 767 locked his captain out of the cockpit, commandeered the plane, then headed to Geneva, where he was arrested upon landing by Swiss authorities (no one was injured). Meryl Davis and Charlie White won the gold medal in ice dance at Sochi, the first Olympic title in the event for the United States. (Davis and White finished 4.53 points ahead of Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada, the 2010 champions.) Jimmy Fallon made his debut as host of NBC's "Tonight Show."
