1989 – 25 years ago
• Nearly 800 people came to the first major public event at Centerplace Galleria celebrating the 40th anniversary of Rochester Civic Theater. People danced to the big band sounds of "37th Street Gold" and live and silent auctions raised some $3,500 to benefit RCT.
• Stewartville's Chad Nelson was the freestyle wrestling star at the state youth competition at Mayo Civic Arena. The state's Class A high school champion as a sophomore took first in the cadets and junior divisions.
• Rochester Community College's 400-meter relay team of Thang Nguyen, Steve Yochim, Loren Hedin and Chad Rueber won in 44.1 seconds at the state community college track and field championships.
1964 – 50 years ago

• Everlyn Marie Martig upheld the family tradition when she graduated as valedictorian of the 1964 senior class at West Concord High School. Her three older sisters were also valedictorians in 1949 (Joanne), 1959 (Karen) and 1963 (Mary Lee).
• A need for more discipline for a small minority of unruly students was urged by a delegation of high school teachers when they appeared before the Kenyon Board of Education. Recent issues included the painting of parts of the school building and students wearing improper apparel. Teachers have sent students home for wearing shorts to school and one teacher reported that a girl was wearing a man's shirt much too big for her.
1939 – 75 years ago
• Nine Dover High School seniors will receive diplomas at commencement exercises on June 2. Beulah Schafer is class valedictorian with a 4.0 scholastic average.
• George B. Haun, present football tutor at Bemidji High school, president of the Minnesota High School Coaches association and a graduate of Ripon College, was announced as the next coach and athletic director at Rochester High School.
• The Civil Service Commission has announced open examinations for the position of a principal aeronautical engineering draftsman ($2,300 a year) and a wool marketing specialist ($3,800 a year).
