Day in History: Water shortage hampers Chatfield

1988 — 25 years ago

The 11th annual Rochester Area Ham Fest will be held at John Adams Junior High School. The annual event is sponsored by the Rochester Amateur Radio Club Inc. The event will feature speakers, programs, exhibits and food.

The Chosen Valley High School class of 1973 will have its 15th reunion at the Chosen Valley Golf Club.

The Hardy's Bar-B-Q, a well-known Rochester eating place is adding a second restaurant at 1940 South Broadway.

1963 — 50 years ago

A severe water shortage in Chatfield has resulted in Mayor Frank Pavlich issuing an emergency request for stringent water conservation. "The situation is very serious," the mayor said, urging all residents to keep water use to an essential minimum until the emergency ends. The shortage forced Chatfield firemen to fight four grass fires with paddles instead of water. The shortage has been caused by a water pump malfunction.

The largest scholarship ever to be offered at Rochester Junior College has been established by the Rochester Junior College Foundation. A $500 annual grant will be awarded to a graduating sophomore to apply toward his or her continuing education.

1938 — 75 years ago

Among featured items at the Piggly Wiggly store this week include rolled veal going for 23 cents a pound, beef pot roast for 14 cents a pound and ham for 26 cents a pound.

Betty Jane Sutherland, high school senior, was named Miss Stewartville in a contest conducted at the Lake Theater last night. Marcella Atzinger representing Max's Café was runner-up.

A three-member Preston High School typing team took fifth place out of 32 Minnesota schools. Team members were Maude Anstett, Arlone Kruegel and Charlotte Thorson.
