Decals honor fallen officers, firefighters

Dear Answer Man, what are the big honking decals that show law enforcement badges on Olmsted County sheriff's vehicles? I've wanted to get a closer look but not THAT close. — Timmy of Byron

Yes, obey the law and keep your distance — I'll do the reporting for you.

Those decals show the badges of five law enforcement agencies — Olmsted sheriff, Rochester police, Rochester fire, U.S. Army Military Police and U.S. Customs — and all are marked in memory of fallen officers. Four Rochester police officers have been killed in the line of duty, as have four firefighters and one each from the other agencies.

The decals are on the front end of all sheriff's department vehicles, says Chief Deputy Mark Darnell, and have been for three or four years. They're also on many Rochester police squads and maybe other agency vehicles as well.

It's an excellent way to remind people such as Timmy of Byron of the men and women who've given their lives to protect and serve us.
