OWATONNA — Major delays on northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 35 near Owatonna can be expected during weekends and peak travel times now through September, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
Delays are necessary as work continues on the three-year reconstruction of U.S. 14 from Waseca to Owatonna, which also includes construction of a new interchange at I-35 and U.S. 14.
The department expects stop-and-go traffic for several miles in each direction from the construction zone because of heavy traffic volumes, especially on Friday and Sunday evenings.
Motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes and avoid the area during peak travel times.
During backups, motorists should use both lanes and take turns merging into the construction zone, where single-lane traffic begins.
