Duluth readies Dylan-inspired manhole covers

DULUTH — The first two Bob Dylan-themed manhole covers that will grace a Duluth street named for the music legend have been cast in iron.

The Dylan manhole covers designed by local artist Laurel Sanders were produced in an iron pour on Saturday. They'll be installed on Bob Dylan Way later this year, in front of Duluth's Fitger's entertainment complex.

Sanders' design contains images inspired by the lyrics of Dylan's classic tune "Subterranean Homesick Blues," including a candle and a pair of sandal-clad feet.

The nonprofit arts group behind the project plans to eventually replace all the manholes on Bob Dylan Way with manholes inspired by the Minnesota-born singer, who was born in Duluth.
