A history of the city is being prepared by Harriet Hodgson of Rochester. A 130-page book will be published by Windsor Publications in cooperation with the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce.
The Star Clipper Dinner Train will discontinue boarding operations from Lyle by Nov. 1. The train runs on a rail line from Glenville to Waterloo, Iowa.
1962 — 50 years ago
Ed Sullivan, the New York television celebrity, was released from Saint Marys Hospital after undergoing gall bladder surgery. Sullivan, who is staying at the Kahler Hotel, will convalesce in Rochester for a few days before returning to New York.

The 68th anniversary of the celebration of Labor Day will be observed in a quiet fashion. City, county and federal offices and the Mayo Clinic will be closed.
1937 — 75 years ago
Sunny skies smiled on Spring Valley during the two-day Corn and Beef Days. A corn and barbeque event opened the celebration as farm families came in to join villagers, and more 1,600 pounds of barbequed beef was consumed along with a large truckload of steamed corn.
Photographs of three local children received blue ribbons at the State Photographer Convention in Duluth. They are on display at Cutshall Studio in Rochester. The photos are of little Marilyn Siem, "Billy" Prickman and Sharon Pesch.
