Elgin school addition ready in 1960

2009 — One year ago

The Rochester Honkers won their fifth Northwoods League title by beating the La Crosse (Wis.) Loggers 7-4. The team, one of the original Northwoods League teams, also won the title in 1994, 1997, 1999 and 2006.

Mayo Clinic is launching a syndicated weekly radio program, "Medical Edge Weekend." Mayo experts will discuss health and medical topics for a worldwide audience.

1985 — 25 years ago

Rochester Area Builders Inc. has pledged $20,000 over 10 years, to be matched by the Rochester Park and Recreation Departmen, to renovate Mayo Field.

Residential development in northwest Rochester continues. It consists of 130 acres and has been the site of about 400 single-family homes being built in the past six years. The area is north of 37th Street Northwest and east of U.S. 52.

A combination of horseshoe throwing and a horse-pulling contest will be held at the Douglas Saloon and Social Club. Money raised will go to the Mayo Foundation for arthritis research.

1960 — 50 years ago

Cecil Williamson of Hammond was presented the Boy Scout God and Country Award in ceremonies at Evangelical United Brethren Church in Hammond. The award is given to a scout with knowledge of the Bible who is active in service projects with the church and community.

The new $550,000 high school addition in Elgin will be ready for occupancy when school opens Sept. 2. The addition includes five general classrooms, special departments in science, industrial arts, home economics, music, business education, library, administrative offices, gymnasium, hot lunch and health facilities.
