Father and son re-united in 1961

PJ’s Budget Market in Zumbro Falls has closed, and the building and equipment will be sold at auction. The grocery store was in business for more than 75 years. The store was founded by Ed Freiheit.

1961 — 50 years ago

After 17 years, a Rochester man and his father from Poland have been re-united. Michael Sokolski, an IBM engineer, is being reunited with his father, Wladyslaw Sokolski. They have not seen each other since 1943, when they were separated during World War II.

The largest airplane and the first prop jet to serve Rochester will begin service here April 30. The four-engine aircraft carries 77 passengers.

1936 — 75 years ago

All ice has disappeared from Lake Pepin, and the Mayo yacht "North Star" made its first trip of the year, leaving its winter berth in Red Wing and arriving in Winona.

The German Lutheran parsonage at Hay Creek was destroyed by fire. People from the CCC camp and the Red Wing and Goodhue fire departments stopped the fire. The parsonage is a total loss, and damaged is estimated at $4,000. A defective chimney was blamed as the cause of the fire.
