Unlike many food drives, Rochester's "Feed Those in Need" Saturday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.at The Salon, 324 1st Ave. S.W. is both a donation site and a place for people in need to get food.
Hunger Solutions, Community Food Response, Squash Blossom Farms and Centro Campesino originally sought to offset food stamp losses duethe government shutdown, which ended today.
But one of the organizers, Gale Julius, said the drive will go on.Canned goods, produce, rice, beans and other food donations are sought.
Anyone hungry for a free meal of chili and bread — and food supplies to take home — is invited to stop in, with donated food immediately available and free music.
Many in need work "multiple jobs and it's very difficult for them to make ends meet," said Laurie Kratky, Olmsted County WIC manager not involved in the food drive. She praised volunteers, saying "I applaud what they are doing."
