Fire causes thousands in damage

Fire caused an estimated $200,000 in damage Monday to a house in southwest Rochester.

Firefighters responded to the call at 3 13th Ave. S.W. at 5:30 p.m. When firefighters arrived, fire was coming from open basement windows, and there was smoke in every level of the house, according to battalion commander Chuck Hermann.

Hermann said no one was home at the time, and the cause has not been determined. The police department is helping with the investigation.

Twenty-two firefighters responded to the scene, and 12 off-duty firefighters were paged to cover other calls while crews worked on the house fire, Hermann said.

The Red Cross was called for one person who lived at the house, Hermann said.
