Firefighters rescue two from stopped elevator

Two women were briefly stuck in an elevator Saturday morning in southwest Rochester, leading to a fire department response and an accusation that a building resident stopped the elevator on purpose.

The elevator in a building in the 700 block of Fifth Street Southwest was going down about 11:45 a.m. when it stopped 3 feet below the fourth-floor threshold. One of the women inside is disabled, and rescue workers helped her climb out while the other woman climbed out on her own, according to assistant fire marshal Larry Mueller.

A resident at the building claimed that another resident opened an exterior elevator door on purpose, which caused the elevator to stop, Mueller said. No police report was filed, said Rochester police Capt. Brian Winters.
