The former Dr. Charles Mayo house on Fourth Street Southwest was auctioned off for $158,000. The 1893 home was purchased by a Minneapolis man. Dr. Charles and his wife lived in the house for 25 years before moving to Mayowood. The home also has served at the YMCA and a residence for nursing students.

Beginning Jan. 1, there will be a 1 percent reduction in the paychecks of some 26 million workers for the Social Security funds they will be eligible for when they retire at age 65. For example, a worker who makes $100 a month and works 30 years will be entitled to a retirement benefit of $42.50 per month.
