MAZEPPA — A rural Mazeppa farm family lost at least 50 large round hay bales, a skid loader, a combine and a shed in a fire that was discovered around 2 p.m. Sunday.
Dave Mohler, who owned the shed with his wife, Chris Mohler, said the hay had been in the shed for two weeks but still somehow caused the fire.
"It had to be the hay," he said, "that is the only possibility."
He has no idea of the financial loss; hay bales sell for about $20 now.
He said they noticed the hay on fire, with flames coming out from below the pallets on which the hay sat, he said. The Mazeppa Fire Department responded and controlled the fire, Mohler said. After about 2.5 hours, "we told them to let it burn itself out" and the firefighters left, he said. It was still burning this morning.

The family stored the hay to feed to beef cattle, he said. Hay in the shed was overflow from another shed that is full, he said. They also have more hay coming when they harvest another cutting, he said.
