Mayo Clinic announced Monday that one of downtown Rochester’s largest proposed developments is “paused.”

The plan to build a seven-story ultra-luxury hotel plus four floors for the clinic to use to treat patients on top of the 21-story Gonda Building has been placed on hold, according to Mayo statement released by Kelley Luckstein.

However, the joint venture with the Singapore-based Pontiac Land Group does seem to still be a viable project for the future.

“Mayo Clinic and Pontiac Land Group today announced that plans for the 11-floor expansion of the Gonda Building in downtown Rochester, Minn., will be paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic," according to the statement. “Mayo Clinic remains fully committed to developing and implementing plans that support the facility needs of patients for years to come, including facility expansion opportunities with Pontiac Land Group and other developers.”

Pontiac Land is led by the Kwee family, whom Forbes magazine listed earlier this month as the ninth-richest family in Singapore,

In September 2018, Mayo Clinic announced the venture with the Pontiac Land Group. For Mayo Clinic, the partnership will result in an expansion to the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center and Outpatient Procedure Center.

The preliminary plan was for construction to begin by the end of 2019 or early 2020, with the project being completed by the end of 2022. In 2019, construction was pushed back to start “later in 2020.”

Many things are still unknown about this project. Mayo and Pontiac Land have not responded to questions about how many rooms the hotel will have or what hotel brand will sit atop a Mayo Clinic building. While Mayo officials have stated that the clinic will spend an estimated $190 million on its part of the venture, no estimates on the total cost of the project have been released.

Once completed, the project will make the now 21-floor Gonda Building into Rochester’s tallest skyscraper with the hotel on top.

The proposed addition will add about 185 feet to the building to bring it to 490 feet tall with 32 stories. Broadway Plaza, at 342 feet, is the tallest currently.

The shiny downtown Gonda Building was constructed in 2001.
