"See. Safe. Smart." is the name of a public safety campaign being launched today by the group Active Living Rochester.
The campaign, featuring "hometown heroes," fosters active, healthy lifestyles while raising awareness that safety is the No. 1 priority on roads, paths and sidewalks.
More than 493 pedestrians and bicyclists were killed and approximately 20,000 injured on Minnesota roads in the past decade, according to the Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety.
Featured on campaign billboards and bus signs will be Diane Tucker, a longtime local school crossing guard; Lt. K.C. Reed of the Rochester Police Department; and Curt Acola, who uses a wheelchair and reminds drivers to look out for low-profile pedestrians.
Active Living Rochester is a partnership that includes CardioVision 2020/Mayo Clinic, Rochester Public Works, Olmsted County Public Health and the Rochester-Olmsted Planning Department. The ad campaign is supported in part by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota's Prevention Minnesota initiative, which combats the root causes of cancer and heart disease. Physical inactivity is a leading factor.
