Heard on the Street: Apollo Liquor to go big with new south store

Apollo Liquorplans to play it cool by moving its South Broadway store to a much larger spot and build what might be Rochester's largest beer cooler.

Ari Kolas,of Apollo, said the plan is to slide the 2630 S. Broadway liquor store a bit to the northwest to 420 Crossroads Drive.

That's the former home of Hirshfield's,tucked in near the Hy-Vee Crossroadsstore. Hirshfield's paints moved its Med City store to a North Broadway location earlier this year.

The new Apollo store will have 6,000 square feet of space, which is almost double the size of the existing South Broadway shop. Kolas said that means the Crossroads Apollo will be able to offer a much larger selection, particularly in the beer area.

"We're going to have a beer cooler with 35 doors. That's going to be one of the largest, if not the largest, beer cooler in Rochester," Kolas said.

He hopes to have the store moved and open in the new spot in September.

The larger space also means Apollo will need more staff. Kolas has about five employees working at the existing South Broadway store, and that number is expected to grow to seven to 10 at the new spot.

Kolas is excited about this new project, because it could bring in new customers with Hy-Vee and Tony's Smoke Shopboth being located nearby.

Apollo Liquor has six locations in Rochester. Four are owned by Apollo. Apollo Wine & Spiritsat 4530 Maine Ave. SE and the People's Food Coop Apollo Wines & Spirits at 519 First Ave. SW both are co-branded partners of Apollo.
