Hearing set for Lake Zumbro dredging

Decision-makers behind a multimillion-dollar project to dredge Lake Zumbro will present financial information to the public at an assessment hearing Wednesday evening.

The Olmsted-Wabasha Lake Zumbro Joint Powers Board advertised the meeting for 7 p.m. Wednesday in the douncil/board chambers of the city-county Government Center to present a reasonable estimate of the assessment cost. Assessments were last estimated at $1.617 million.

Public comments on the project will be taken at the meeting, according to a notice.

The project began as a $7 million endeavor with $3.5 million in state support. Since then, local shares have come up short and the project stands at $6.567 million in funding. Private group Lake Zumbro Forever has pledged to come up with the difference .

Local funding commitments to be presented at the hearing will show $1,167,000 from Rochester Public Utilities, $1,616,500 from the Lake Zumbro Improvement District assessment to property owners, $400,000 from Olmsted County and $100,000 from Wabasha County.

The project proposes to remove sediment, improve recreational navigation and storage capacity of the lake, restore lake access to shoreline property owners and prevent further degradation of water quality, among other objective listed in joint powers board materials.
