Houses evacuated because of gas leak

ELGIN — About 10 people were evacuated from three houses in Elgin on Wednesday afternoon because of a gas leak.

It was repaired, and they were allowed to return about two hours later, said Assistant Fire Chief Brian Shones.

The call came in about 3:15 p.m. at 810 Riverwood Court. Gas was leaking from the ground when firefighters arrived, so they evacuated nearby homes, he said. He isn't sure how the leak happened, but some utility work was being done in the area.

After about two hours, the leak was fixed and firefighters were allowed to leave, he said.
