IBM lowers its PC price

1986 — 25 years ago

Mackie’s Home Furnishings will soon open in Rochester. Owners Don and Joyce Mackie have moved the business from Iowa to Rochester.

IBM announced that it has reduced the price of its entry-level personal computer by $400. The PC has 256 kilobytes of internal memory and two floppy disk drives, and now costs $1,595.

1961 — 50 years ago

Ann Landers will return to Rochester in September to address a public gathering. More than 3,000 people turned out to hear her when she spoke here in February 1959.

1936 — 75 years ago

In his 11th annual report to the school board, Superintendent G.H. Sanberg called for a plan to provide Rochester High School graduates with employment after graduation. Moral deterioration, which is likely to accompany unemployment, can be a serious problem.

Dr. C.E. Fawcett has been re-elected to be president of the Stewartville board of education, a post he has held more than 30 years.
