Austin native Jim Hormel, the first openly gay U.S. ambassador, will be in town Saturday to sign copies of his new memoir, "Fit to Serve."
The youngest son of Jay Hormel, and grandson of founder George A. Hormel, Jim was appointed Ambassador to Luxembourg after a vicious six-year political fight in Washington, D.C.
He's devoted more than 40 years to advancing progressive causes, particularly lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender rights.
"Fit to Serve" recounts a life of public service and private struggle, from Hormel's privileged childhood in Austin to the personal and political journey that led him through marriage and parenthood to a lifetime of activism and philanthropy.
Hormel will read from his book, answer questions and sign books from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Coffee House on Main, 329 N. Main St.
