Officials at IBM Rochester announced the corporation will contribute a $31,000 grant and a staff person to help solve a shortage of infant day care in southeastern Minnesota. The grant was presented to Child Care Resources & Referral, a Rochester based organization.
The Mayo Spartans golf team won the Region 1AA title and will advance to the state golf tournament at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids, Minn.
1970 — 40 years ago
Rochester’s third public junior high school, John Adams is about 80 percent complete. The $3.73 million structure is scheduled to open when classes resume Aug. 28.

Normally tame streams in Goodhue and Wabasha counties went on a rampage after 6 to 8 inches of torrential rain. Bridges, roads, crops and soil was extensively damaged. Crop and soil damage is estimated at $2.6 million.
1950 — 60 years ago
A women’s Army Corps recruiter will be in Rochester to talk with women interested in joining the WAC’s or the Air Force. She will be at the National Guard Armory 123 S. Broadway.
A tribute was paid during a special service to Ida Halvorson, who has taught Sunday school at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kenyon for 50 years. She has been a member of the church since she was confirmed there around the turn of the century.
