Lawmakers find different ways to deal with shutdown pay

Area lawmakers are finding different ways to deal with their paychecks drawn during the state government shutdown last month.

Sen. Dan Sparks, DFL-Austin, is donating his pay from the shutdown period to the United Way of Freeborn and Mower counties.

Meanwhile, Rep. Rich Murray, R-Albert Lea, is awaiting confirmation that his pay from the shutdown is deducted from his next check. He was unable to stop it prior to the shutdown, but doesn't want pay for the period when others weren't paid.

Murray's House counterpart, Rep. Jeanne Poppe, DFL-Austin, said she will continue to donate to charity, but won't donate her specific salary during the government shutdown.
