Lewiston plans to fill police officer jobs

LEWISTON — Lewiston officials hope to interview candidates for three police officer positions, including a part-time chief, this month.

The city has three officers, including interim Chief Jeremy Newton, a full-time officer and a part-time officer, said City Administrator Barb Hampel. The city can call on the Winona County Sheriff's Department if no city officer is available, she said.

She isn't sure how many people have applied. Newton wasn't available for more information.

The plan is to have the new officers working as soon as possible, Hampel said.

When the three officers are hired, Lewiston will have a part-time chief, a full-time officer and four part-time officers.

In March, the city fired Chief Dave Kleinschmidt, who has filed a lawsuit against the city contending he shouldn't have been fired. The lawsuit is pending, Hampel said.
