A team of middle school "mathletes" from Friedell Middle School, of Rochester, recently won the Southeast Minnesota MATHCOUNTS competition.
Members of the winning team are: Dean Anderson, Jordan Anderson, Michelle Campeau and Linda Peng. The team is coached by Greg Schoenbeck.
The team with the second highest score was Kellogg Middle School, of Rochester. Members of the Kellogg team are: Jerry He, Hongyi (David) Jiang, Henry Wang and Colin Weber. The Kellogg team is coached by Xianshu Wang.
A rookie team from Schaeffer Academy placed third out of the 10 regional teams competing.
Campeau took first place in the individual competition, with Weber claiming second, Henry Wang claiming third and Peng claiming fourth.

These two teams and these four individuals will advance to state finals, to be held March 25-26 in Plymouth. They will compete for a chance to advance to the national finals in Washington, D.C., in May.
Additionally, Sachchit Murali claimed first place in the Countdown Round, with Henry Wang claiming second place. The Countdown Round is a one-on-one oral tournament among the top 16 mathletes scoring in the morning tests.
MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide math coaching and competition program designed to improve math skills among U.S. students. Students compete individually and as teams in written and fast-paced oral matches. Subjects include algebra, probability, statistics and geometry.
The local competition is sponsored by the Southeast Chapter of the Minnesota Society of Professional Engineers, and Rochester Community and Technical College.
