Man arrested in alleged racial attack

A 44-year-old man is in police custody for allegedly assaulting another man in what authorities are calling a racially motivated attack.

Rochester police Capt. Brian Winters said police were called about 12:40 p.m. Sunday to First Avenue Northeast and East Center Street. A 23-year-old man sitting on a curb said he'd been visiting with the 44-year-old man at a Rochester bar. He said they left and argued over a woman in the alley behind Broadway.

He said the other man knocked him to the ground, hit him, took his cane and used the cane in the assault, and yelled racial slurs.

The victim is black; the suspect is white. Winters said the incident is being treated as a bias crime. He said the victim was treated at Saint Marys Hospital and released.
