Man charged after alleged jail escape attempt

A man already in custody on drug and domestic assault charges had two more felonies added after he allegedly attempted to escape from jail over the weekend.

Travers Davel McDaniel, 20, was charged Monday with one count each of attempted escape from custody and first-degree damage to property.

The charges stem from an incident early Saturday morning, when an Olmsted County Detention Center deputy caught McDaniel damaging his cell and the window in his cell, said Capt. Scott Behrns.

McDaniel had allegedly broken a leg off a table, providing him with a two-pound, 14-inch pipe, the report says, which he used to break the window of his cell.

The deputy discovered McDaniel had also pulled the caulking from around the window in what appeared to be an attempt to get outside. Despite the broken window, Behrns said, there was little chance McDaniel would have been able to escape: The 40-by-16-inch window also had a 3/4-inch bar running through it, leaving no room for a body to fit through.

McDaniel was in custody after being arrested in an Oct. 7 raid on a home in the 2300 block of Park Lane Southeast. In addition to the drug charge filed in that case, McDaniel has a warrant for his arrest out of Wisconsin, court documents show, as well as two counts of felony domestic assault.

His next court date has not been set.
