Man cited after altercation with child

AUSTIN — A 38-year-old man has been cited after police say he assaulted a child outside an Austin elementary school.

The investigation began after a call Wednesday afternoon reporting a fight between an adult and a child at Sumner Elementary School, which hosts a summer lunch program.

Austin police said three juveniles, ages 10, 12 and 13, were at the school when the man grabbed one of their hats. The youngest child grabbed it back and ran off, the report says, and the man chased him, tackled him and held the child down.

The man was gone when officers arrived, but they later found him in the 1700 block of Second Street Northeast.

Austin police refused to name the man, who was cited for fifth-degree assault and disorderly conduct.

Austin Police Capt. David McKichan said the 10-year-old's injuries were consistent with the charges of assault.
