HASTINGS — A Hastings man has been sentenced to 27 years after being convicted of sexually assaulting a 9-month-old child in his care.
Judge Joseph Carter on Monday ordered that 42-year-old Michael Frederick Schmidt serve at least 18 years in prison and the rest on supervised release.
Schmidt also must register as a sexual predator, stay away from the victim and her family, and make restitution.
The judge doubled the penalty recommended under Minnesota sentencing guidelines.
Jurors found aggravating factors in the April assault, including the fact the baby was too young to tell anyone what happened or to fight off her attacker.
