A man in a wheelchair was struck in a hit-and-run accident Monday evening at the intersection of Broadway Avenue and First Street Northwest in Rochester after leaving evening prayer at the Masjed Abubakar Siddiq mosque.
Bashir Haji Iman, 63, was crossing the southbound lane in the crosswalk at the mosque's curb when a black SUV ran the red light and struck him on the left side of his body, according to multiple witnesses interviewed at the scene minutes after the accident.
Mahdi Hull, who is Iman's nephew, said he turned around when he heard a scream and saw the vehicle. He said the impact pushed Iman sideways, breaking a foot pedal and tire on the wheelchair.
Hull said he attempted to run after the vehicle, which continued driving south on Broadway without stopping. He said he lost the vehicle when it took a hard right onto Center Street.
Rochester police and emergency responders arrived moments later; Iman was taken from the scene in an ambulance. Hull said he is hopeful his uncle wasn't too seriously injured but he was unsure at the scene, particularly since his uncle is paralyzed from the waist down.
