Man threatens to blow up Minneapolis motel

MINNEAPOLIS — A man is in custody after calling police to say he had a bomb and was going to blow up a Minneapolis motel.

Sgt. William Palmer says the man called 911 around 9:15 a.m. Sunday to say he had explosives and was going to blow up the Aqua City Motel. The SWAT Team was called at 11 a.m. but was canceled when the man gave himself up.

Palmer says the man spoke with negotiators for more than an hour on the phone before he surrendered.

This incident has been classified as a mental health issue. The man was taken to a hospital for medical treatment and a psychiatric evaluation.

Palmer says no explosives were found at the motel. A small number of people were evacuated as a precaution.
