WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Mayo Clinic Center for Regenerative Medicine is co-sponsoring next week's World Stem Cell Summit in Florida. More than 1,200 people are expected to attend the 12th annual event.
Mayo will have a delegation of administrators, researchers and clinical experts participating in presentations and panel discussions involving stem cell discoveries, promising clinical trials and therapy options currently available.
The summit is planned for Dec. 6-9 and kicks off with Public Day, where stem cell issues will be discussed from a consumer perspective. Mayo's Karen Krucker and Thomas Gonwa are among those being featured at the four-day event.
Dr. Krucker, stem cell therapy program manager at Mayo Clinic, will talk about educating patients and their families before receiving stem cell treatment. Her perspective is noteworthy after having worked at the Consult Resource Center for Regenerative Medicine at Mayo Clinic, which was the first consult service established in the U.S. to provide guidance for patients and families on stem cell protocols.
Dr. Gonwa, deputy director, translation, in the Mayo Clinic Center for Regenerative Medicine, will make opening comments Tuesday during the plenary session and participate in a panel called "Best Practices for Effective Collaboration." He oversees translational regenerative medicine infrastructure across Mayo Clinic, ensuring technological and translational readiness necessary to sustain scientific excellence, practice advancement and fulfillment of institutional and site-specific goals.
