LONDON — Mayo Clinic is adding a variety of medical specialties to its premium health clinic in central London.

Mayo Clinic Healthcare, which opened as a joint venture with Oxford University in late 2019, recently announced that it is adding several medical specialties to its offerings, including cardiology, gastroenterology and pulmonary medicine. Mayo Clinic became the sole owner of the London clinic in 2020.

The clinic is located at 15 Portland Place in a historic six-story building across the street from BBC headquarters in London’s high-profile Harley Street Medical Area. Mayo Clinic describes the international clinic as “a gateway to Mayo Clinic’s roughly 4,000 physicians in the United States and a hub for virtual visits …”

The new London cardiology team includes Dr. Elijah Behr, Dr. Sanjay Prasad and Dr. Gosia Wamil. Gastroenterologists Dr. James East and Dr. Bobby Prasad have also been added to the London staff. Dr. John Costello is providing pulmonology care.

Mayo Clinic isn't the only top U.S. health care institution staking a claim in London.

The Cleveland Clinic is working on transforming a seven-story, gargoyle-festooned building near Buckingham Palace into a 200-bed hospital with eight operating theaters. Cleveland Clinic hopes to open the London hospital in 2021.

In Minnesota, abortion is protected by the state’s constitution and is legal up to the point of viability, which is generally thought to begin at about 24 weeks, when the fetus can survive outside the womb. Those who work with Minnesotans who seek abortions say barriers, both legal and practical, forced some to travel to Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico, Washington, D.C., and Wisconsin even prior to the Supreme Court’s decision.
