Mayo Clinic is working on plans to build an approximately 100,000-square-foot medical facility in the small town of Hudson, Wis.
A proposal by Mayo Clinic Health System–Northwest Wisconsin Region has been submitted to the Hudson planning commission.
"Preliminary plans indicate a medical facility building which is approximately 100,000 square feet and would include approximately 60-75 clinic rooms, six to eight operating rooms and four procedure suites. The proposed medical facility will have a clinic function as well as an outpatient surgical function," according to the permit application.
Hudson, which has 13,744 residents, is 15 minutes east of St. Paul and 30 minutes east of Minneapolis. A facility there could make Mayo Clinic much more competitive in the Twin Cities.
Mayo Clinic officials did not answer questions about what is driving this project and if it involves expanding in the Twin Cities. However, two Wisconsin executives did issue statements.

"We have agreed to purchase 10 acres of land at Stageline Road in the city of Hudson and submitted a land zoning application for a conditional use permit to allow for all flexibility in considering the types of services to offer," said Michael Morrey, regional chairman of administration of Mayo Clinic Health System–Northwest Wisconsin.
Hudson Hospital & Clinic, which is owned by Bloomington-based HealthPartners, is also based on Stageline Road in Hudson.
Hudson Hospital is a 25-bed facility with an estimated 1,500 patient admissions a year, according to its website. It employs 60 medical staffers and features its own birth center.
Dr. Richard Helmers, regional vice president of Mayo Clinic Health System–Northwest Wisconsin, said system representatives are starting to talk to people in that area about the proposed project.
"Mayo Clinic Health System will be engaging with community leaders and residents across western Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota about their health care and broader community needs to determine the best use of the property," he wrote on Thursday. "We will continue to keep the community and our patients and hard-working employees informed and engaged as this process moves forward."
The next step for the proposal is for the Hudson Plan Commission to hold a public hearing about it on Feb. 22 at the Hudson City Hall.
