A commercial floor scrubber caught fire at a Mayo Clinic support building Tuesday morning, but sprinklers activated soon enough to save the fire from causing substantial damage.
At 11:13 a.m., the Rochester Fire Department was notified of a fire at 4001 41st Street Northeast. The floor scrubber caught fire in a janitorial closet due to an electrical issue in its battery compartment, and was located right next to a very flammable pallet full of paper products.
The alarm and sprinklers located above the fire were activated, and the fire was extinguished by the sprinklers by the time firefighters made entry. The building was evacuated.
"The system worked as planned. It saved hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars in damages," said Larry Mueller, assistant fire marshal.
There is still an investigation as to whether parts of the floor scrubber had been recalled or not.
